«Tour of the USSR» Shumshu island. Kuril airborne operation in 1945

Historical background

Shumshu is one of the islands of the northern group of the Kuril Islands. It is separated from Kamchatka (Cape Lopatka) by the First Kuril Strait, and from the Paramushir Island by the Second Kuril Strait. Administratively, the island is part of the Severo-Kurilskiy urban district of the Sakhalin region.

Shumshu, located 6.5 miles from the southern coast of Kamchatka. Here the Japanese had the Kataoka naval base, adapted for basing surface forces up to cruisers. They created a strong antiamphibious defense on the island, which consisted of anti-tank ditches and escarpments, as well as pillboxes and bunkers, connected by deep and long underground galleries.

Only on the island of Shumshu, measuring 20 x 15 km, 34 bunkers, 24 bunkers, about a dozen powerful strongholds, 98 guns of up to 100 mm caliber, over 300 machine-gun and fire points were built. The depth of the constructed structures is 50-70 m, the length of the anti-tank ditches is up to 40 km. On Paramushir, the Japanese created 13 bunkers, 44 bunkers, and 10 km of anti-tank ditches.

The capture of Shumshu Island, also landing on Shumshu Island, is the first and decisive event in the course of the entire Kuril operation, which began on August 17, 1945. Although Japan agreed to accept the terms of surrender in World War II back on August 15, the order was not communicated to the Japanese units, and the Japanese armed forces continued to resist. On August 15, the Soviet command decided to land a landing party on Shumshu Island.

Suddenness, courage, self-sacrifice became the main factors of success in the liberation of the islands, and the basis for the victory of the landing operation was laid by the decisive actions of the forward detachment of paratroopers of Major P. Shutov, who was able to reach the main strongholds of the Japanese at heights 165 and 171 in two hours.
